It’s election season in America.

Soooo… I recommend turning off all social media, all news, and all talk radio.  The 24 hour news cycle is negative by nature.  Negativity sells.  Fear sells.

All advertisers know this.  In the newspaper business years ago, there was a saying, “If it bleeds, it leads.”  Negative, scary events go to the front page.

The fact is, there will always be negative and scary events.  That’s the world we live in.  Doesn’t mean we have to focus there.

I believe, in general, we get what we focus on.  Instead of allowing the negative news direct our focus, we should focus on the good in our lives.

A lot of good is happening in the world.  The problem is, good is not always spectacular.

For example, millions of moms will make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for their kids today.  The negative 24 hour negative newscasters will ignore that beautiful fact.  Even though, when they were little, their moms probably made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for them, too.

In the middle of a negative weekend, remember the words of Mark Twain.

“I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them have never happened.”

By the way, if you are looking for a distraction from the negativity, and if you are in Birmingham, Alabama this morning, stop by Birmingham’s newest (and only) Lego store, Bricks&MiniFigs: Vestavia Hills.

Today is our Grand Opening.  I’ll be hanging out all day.  (You don’t even have to be a Lego fan.)

The address is 1056, Montgomery Hwy, Vestavia Hills, Alabama.  We will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Almost every Saturday, I send out a Tip of the Week.  The tip of the week is usually something I have picked up along the way that may make your life a little easier.

If you would like to hear from me (almost) every Saturday, just go to the home page of my site and plug in your name and email.   You will also get a free digital copy of my book on learning Latin (and almost anything else).  Just go here: https://dwanethomas.com/ and enter your name and email.

If you want to buy the digital book instead (because you just feel like buying me a cup of coffee) go here: https://dwanethomas.gumroad.com/l/fzixlh

If you are interested in learning Latin, you can go through the classes on my site 24/7.  I recommend the book Lingua Latina by Hans Ørberg.  If you tackle the book and find yourself bogged down, you may find the classes on my site helpful.  To join, just click here: https://dwanethomas.com/join/

If you want a more professionally filmed Latin learning experience, check out the best-selling DVD series: Visual Latin.

Or, if you want to skip Latin, and just jump right into learning English words from Latin and Greek roots, you may enjoy the series Word Up!  Warning.   Word Up! is a bit wacky.  You will learn a lot… but, you may find yourself rolling your eyes, too.

I teach other languages on my site, too.  The current schedule is here: https://dwanethomas.com/schedule/
