I received this question:

My son is currently taking your Lingua Latina online class. This fall I will add two more kids and son #1 will move on to LL 20+ . Did I read correctly that there is a$500 family fee? Does this change if you grade all three? Thanks for your entertaining lessons… Hope Greece is treating you well.

Here is my reply:

You read correctly. I changed my site recently to a subscription site. I have a large family and I get tired of the penalties imposed upon me for having a large family. For instance, we are currently in Greece while I study the Greek language. For lodging, we are using air B&B. Many providers charge 10 to 12 extra dollars per person per night after four people. With a family of seven, this makes things more expensive and more difficult.

I have watched online Latin and Greek providers charge anywhere from $400-$600 per person. At $400 per person, were I to enroll my five children in a one year of Latin course, I would be forced to pay $2000 per year for just one course! I didn’t feel like doing that to myself, and I don’t feel like doing that to other people.

So, last year I changed my site to a subscription site. $500 per year per family grants you access to all of the videos, all of the live classes and personal grading.

I like helping people. Unlike some other online programs, I don’t have a desire to squeeze families for every last dollar I can get from them.

I see myself as a helpful advisor, not a money extraction machine.

I am likely leaving money on the table. Maybe a lot of money.

That’s okay. I can sleep well at night this way.

Let me know if you need more help!
