An online student wants to know:

I have issues when I have to translate from English to Latin. Is that bad? Will it be ok?

Here is my reply:

I tell my students there are four stages of learning Latin.

First, you just listen.  You are trying to learn how to pronounce the language.

Second, you start reading.  You read from Latin to English.

Third, you flip the order.  You begin translating into Latin from English.

Fourth, you can finally run.  You begin to think in Latin.

Steps three and four are the hardest.  Don’t feel bad if you are not doing so well as you translate from English to Latin.  It’s hard.

You are ok.

Hang in there.  It will come.
