I received this inquiry:

Hi!

I am wondering how you grade our work in the online Latin class. Could you explain the process?  Thanks!

Here is my reply:

My main goal when grading is to encourage kids to keep going.  I have seen teachers crush students with grades.  Some sort of power trip for them, I suppose.

Here is how I grade.

If a student misspells a word, minus one.  I always count off for spelling.  It’s important.

If a student misses a word, minus one.

If a student misses an entire sentence… in other words, they just don’t get it, minus five.

If they miss more than a few sentences… they get a note of encouragement from me, and, as much as they hate it, they have to repeat the lesson.  It makes absolutely no sense to proceed when you don’t understand a language.
