Tip of the Week #314: Learn English with Asterix the Gaul
For some time, I’d been thinking of resurrecting my old YouTube channel. Hadn’t posted anything in nine years. Honestly, I grew weary of the “Latin perfect pronunciation police”. Let’s call them the LPPP’s for short.
If you have no idea what I am talking about, then good for you. You would not believe how uptight some people get about the “correct” Latin pronunciation.
I am not even sure what the correct English pronunciation is. I’ve lived in England, Maine, Colorado, Alaska, New Hampshire, Louisiana, Alabama and Oklahoma. Still couldn’t tell you which English pronunciation is correct. But, if you “mispronounce” Latin online, the LPPP’s are all over you like ugly on an ape.
Then, this week, I ran across a new favorite quote of mine.
Punch perfectionism in the face and press record.
So, I did. I punched perfectionism in the face hit record.
I’ve been learning French, in part, with a French teacher who takes students through the comic book Asterix the Gaul.
Inspired by him, I wondered if there were any such videos for people trying to level up in English. I looked around, didn’t find much, and decided to launch a new series.
This week I started teaching English using the same comic book, Asterix the Gaul.
So, if you know anyone trying to level up in English… this series may help:

Or if you just like the Asterix series and want learn a little bit about etymology, the Roman invasion of ancient Gaul, French culture, or Latin, feel free to watch along. These comic books include all of that and more!

Almost every Saturday, I send out a Tip of the Week. The tip of the week is usually something I have picked up along the way that may make your life a little easier.
If you would like to hear from me (almost) every Saturday, just go to the home page of my site and plug in your name and email. You will also get a free digital copy of my book on learning Latin (and almost anything else). Just go here: https://dwanethomas.com/ and enter your name and email.
If you want to buy the digital book instead (because you just feel like buying me a cup of coffee) go here: https://dwanethomas.gumroad.com/l/fzixlh
If you are interested in learning Latin, you can go through the classes on my site 24/7. I recommend the book Lingua Latina by Hans Ørberg.
If you tackle the book and find yourself bogged down, you may find the classes on my site helpful. To join, just click here: https://dwanethomas.com/join/
If you want a more professionally filmed Latin learning experience, check out the best-selling DVD series: Visual Latin.
Or, if you want to skip Latin, and just jump right into learning English words from Latin and Greek roots, you may enjoy the series Word Up! Warning. Word Up! is a bit wacky. You will learn a lot… but, you may find yourself rolling your eyes, too.
I teach other languages on my site, too. The current schedule is here: https://dwanethomas.com/schedule/
