I received this question:
We are going to be memorizing the pronouns this year and I have a question about how best to memorize.
The text we use has us memorizing singular mas, fem, neuter across then plural was, fem, neuter across.
Students who have learned it this way complain that it is too confusing to recall let’s say the relative pronoun for fem acc singular quickly. They wish they had memorized the chart vertically– all masculine sing then plural, fem sing then plural etc.
As I begin the school year I need to make a decision, have them memorize horizontally or vertically? I know that it is the norm to go horizontally but is it the best practice?
Thanks!
Here is my reply:
I apologize for the delay. I was out of the country for a few months and am now buried under a pile of emails. Finally catching up this afternoon…
Honestly, I don’t really bother memorizing the endings as much anymore. I just tell my students to keep these charts with them whenever they are working on Latin. https://dwanethomas.com/resources-latin/
It took me about four years to create these charts. They have become very popular with Latin students around the world. Print off as many as you like.
That said, if you are going to memorize the pronouns, I recommend memorizing them horizontally. The pronouns flow well when chanting them horizontally.
