Tip of the Week #367: Learn Languages With Peppa Pig
This week, all of my online language classes ended for the summer.
Since I don’t want my students to forget what they’ve learned, I gave them a few summer “homework” recommendations.
When people think of language learning, they usually imagine textbooks, grammar drills, and vocabulary lists.
But there is a surprisingly effective tool that many language learners overlook:
Peppa Pig. Yes—Peppa Pig. I’m serious.
It works surprisingly well for language learners. The vocabulary is simple and repetitive. The characters speak slowly and clearly. Most episodes are only about five minutes long. And because so much is visual, you can often understand what is happening even when you don’t know every word.
Even better, episodes are available in many languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Dutch, and more.
For the languages I teach, here are the official YouTube channels:
Spanish: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrreHSUa5rnuCVDeO8dX4eA
French: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXptamDYEVcU4JCio30hYTw
Italian: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS1SHyxP0UhAg84AKamy3jA
German: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNclt7O1bO7hz8Mari68neg
As it turns out, there is no Latin version of Peppa Pig.
Watching may feel a little silly at first (and after a while, and later, and in the future) —but if it helps you understand and speak another language better, who cares?
I’m curious. Have you ever used a TV show or movie to help you learn a language?

Almost every Saturday, I send out a Tip of the Week. The tip of the week is usually something I have picked up along the way that may make your life a little easier.
If you would like to hear from me (almost) every Saturday, just go to the home page of my site and plug in your name and email. You will also get a free digital copy of my book on learning Latin (and almost anything else). Just go here: https://dwanethomas.com/ and enter your name and email.
If you want to buy the digital book instead (because you just feel like buying me a cup of coffee) go here: https://dwanethomas.gumroad.com/l/fzixlh
If you are interested in learning Latin, you can go through the classes on my site 24/7. I recommend the book Lingua Latina by Hans Ørberg.
If you tackle the book and find yourself bogged down, you may find the classes on my site helpful. To join, just click here: https://dwanethomas.com/join/
If you want a more professionally filmed Latin learning experience, check out the best-selling DVD series: Visual Latin.
Or, if you want to skip Latin, and just jump right into learning English words from Latin and Greek roots, you may enjoy the series Word Up! Warning. Word Up! is a bit wacky. You will learn a lot… but, you may find yourself rolling your eyes, too.
I teach other languages on my site, too. The current schedule is here: https://dwanethomas.com/schedule/
