The late Dr. Gary North used to send out a tip of the week every Saturday.  In fact, I got the idea from him.

Years ago he sent out a tip on budgeting and finance. He said no one had ever told him this stuff.

Here’s Dr. North:

What is the attitude of self-made rich people toward money? This is from The Millionaire Next Door.

1. They live well below their means.

2. They allocate their time, energy, and money efficiently, in ways conducive to building wealth.

3. They believe that financial independence is more important than displaying high social status.

4. Their parents did not provide economic outpatient care.

5. Their adult children are economically self-sufficient.

6. They are proficient in targeting market opportunities.

7. They chose the right occupation

I can vouch for the validity of this list. It has characterized my transition from the salaried middle class to the status of millionaire next door.

Nobody taught me this. Nobody told me. But I did get this outlook of independence vs. status when I was a teenager, I think.

If I were to suggest an outlook favorable toward wealth creation, this would be it. I would add the following:

Tithe 10% to your church.

Take one day off each week.

Save at least 10% of your after-tax income.

Don’t spend your capital on consumption.

Work 12 hours a day, six days a week.

Buy the best tools of your trade.

Try to buy them from someone who did not use them and is selling cheap.

Pay retail only to save time.

Don’t get a divorce.

Me again:

I recommend The Millionaire Next Door.  I read it years ago and it was a pivotal moment in my life. I felt like I was reading a commentary on the biblical book of Proverbs.  Interestingly, I have never heard a sermon on the book of Proverbs.  I’ve also never heard a sermon on finances.  Like the late Dr. North, I have had to learn this stuff on my own.

Almost every Saturday, I send out a Tip of the Week.  It’s just something I have picked up along the way that may make your life a little easier.  If you would like to hear from me (almost) every Saturday, just go to the home page of my site and plug in your name and email.   You will also get a free copy of my book on learning Latin (and almost anything else).  Just go here: https://dwanethomas.com/

If you are interested in learning Latin, you can go through the classes on my site 24/7.  I recommend the book Lingua Latina by Hans Ørberg.  If you tackle the book and find yourself bogged down, you may find the classes on my site helpful.  To join, just click here: https://dwanethomas.com/join/

If you want a more professionally filmed experience, check out the best-selling DVD series: Visual Latin.

Or, if you want to skip Latin, and just jump right into learning English words from Latin and Greek roots, you may enjoy the series Word Up!  Warning.   Word Up! is a bit wacky.  You will learn a lot… but, you may find yourself rolling your eyes, too.
