Tip of the Week #321: A Simple Tool That Could Save Your Life
This tip isn’t about Latin or Greek, or any other languages. It’s about survival. And it could save your life one day.
If you are going on any hikes this spring, carry a whistle.
A whistle can do something your phone can’t do when it’s dead or out of range. It can get someone’s attention fast.
I learned this tip years ago in Boy Scouts. We always had whistles with us. You might want to do the same. Here’s why
1. Whistles are loud. Really Loud.
The blast of a whistle cuts through wind, noise, and chaos. Whether you’re lost in the woods or in an emergency situation, it works. Three short blasts on a whistle is a universal distress signal.
2. It Can Confuse Attackers.
A sudden, ear-piercing whistle blast can startle someone long enough for you to get away.
3. It Doesn’t Need Charging.
This thing doesn’t need Wi-Fi, batteries, or a charging port. You don’t have to download an app. You just blow. That’s it.
4. Rescuers Listen for This.
Rescue teams know the sound. A whistle may lead rescuers straight to trapped hikers. If you’re stuck somewhere and can’t yell anymore… your whistle still works.
5. It’s So Small You’ll Forget You Have It — Until You Need It.
Stick it on your keychain. Clip it to your backpack. Toss one in the glove box. It weighs nothing. Costs a few bucks. Might save your life. Here’s one on amazon for $3: https://amzn.to/4liApjz
One warning. I gave whistles to my all of my kids when they were young for the reasons above. And, they promptly discovered that it was fun to sneak up behind me and blow their whistles as loud as they possibly could. So, if you’re thinking of giving your kids whistles… keep that in mind.

Almost every Saturday, I send out a Tip of the Week. The tip of the week is usually something I have picked up along the way that may make your life a little easier.
If you would like to hear from me (almost) every Saturday, just go to the home page of my site and plug in your name and email. You will also get a free digital copy of my book on learning Latin (and almost anything else). Just go here: https://dwanethomas.com/ and enter your name and email.
If you want to buy the digital book instead (because you just feel like buying me a cup of coffee) go here: https://dwanethomas.gumroad.com/l/fzixlh
If you are interested in learning Latin, you can go through the classes on my site 24/7. I recommend the book Lingua Latina by Hans Ørberg.
If you tackle the book and find yourself bogged down, you may find the classes on my site helpful. To join, just click here: https://dwanethomas.com/join/
If you want a more professionally filmed Latin learning experience, check out the best-selling DVD series: Visual Latin.
Or, if you want to skip Latin, and just jump right into learning English words from Latin and Greek roots, you may enjoy the series Word Up! Warning. Word Up! is a bit wacky. You will learn a lot… but, you may find yourself rolling your eyes, too.
I teach other languages on my site, too. The current schedule is here: https://dwanethomas.com/schedule/
