Tip of the Week #334: How to Instantly stop a Shaving Cut

by | Aug 4, 2025 | Tip of the Week

Cut yourself shaving?

My dad taught me this trick years ago: Keep a Styptic Pencil in your bathroom or travel bag.

The next time you nick yourself shaving, simply wet the tip and apply it directly to the cut. It’ll instantly seal the wound, stop the bleeding, and reduce irritation.

Warning: it will sting. Just let the sting remind you to slow down next time.

Rinse the pencil after use and let it air dry.  They last a very long time.

Henle Latin Returns!

After several years, I’m bringing Henle Latin back to the site!

This Fall, we will work our way through First Year Latin by Robert Henle.

Starting on September 2, we’ll meet Mondays through Thursdays from 10:00 to 10:30 AM Central Time Zone.

If you can’t make it to class, no worries.  You can always watch class later at your own pace.

In class, we will work our way through the chapter topics, slowly and clearly. The book can be complicated, but I’ll explain everything in plain, simple English.

Along the way, we’ll learn the complicated Latin charts and Latin endings.

All the exercises for each chapter are already available, and students are welcome to watch them anytime.

If you’ve been meaning to start—or restart—Henle Latin, this could be your moment.

Fall schedule
Here is what is coming in the fall of 2025.  Subject to change, of course.  But, I try hard not to change the schedule once it’s set.  All times are in the Central Time Zone.

  • Classes Resume: September 2, 2025
  • Fall Break: October 13-17
  • Thanksgiving Break: November 24-28
  • Christmas/New Years: December 22-January 4

Classes coming Fall 2025:
🇩🇪 German 2: Monday-Friday 7:00-7:25 am.  We are continuing with Deutsch Für Ausländer, Part One.  In the spring, we stopped in chapter 15.

🇫🇷 French 1: Monday-Friday 7:30 – 7:55 am.  We are starting in chapter one of Le Français par la Méthode Nature.

🏛️ Latin 4: Monday-Thursday 8:00-8:25 am.  Continuing with Roma Aeterna by Hans Ørberg.

🇬🇷 Greek 1: Monday-Thursday 8:30-8:55 am.  We are starting over with a mix of Logos and New Testament Greek by J. Gresham Machen.

🇪🇸 Spanish 2: Monday-Thursday 9:00-9:25 am.  Continuing on in Madrigal’s Magic Key to Spanish.  Last year we finished chapter 39.  We will pick back up in chapter 40.  Once we finish the book, we will read a novel and start watching shows in Spanish.  I am still looking for something for us to read in Spanish, but we will likely start with El león, la bruja y el armario.

🇪🇸 Spanish 1: Monday-Thursday 9:30-9:55 am.  This is a new class for those just starting in Spanish.
(Both Spanish classes are offered via Compass Classroom.).  We will read Madrigal’s Magic Key to Spanish.

🏛️ Latin 1First Year Latin by Robert Henle:  Monday-Thursday 10:00-10:25 am.  Students are welcome, and so are adults.  We will focus on the grammar concepts in First Year Latin by Robert Henle.

Not sure about joining the classes?
I am convinced you will like them, but… don’t take my word for it. See what others say: https://dwanethomas.com/testimonials/

And now… the same thing I say every week.

Subscribers sometimes use my weekly emails as reminders to unsubscribe from my site.  I get that.

Just keep in mind… I offer something no one else in academia (as far as I know) offers.  Stick with me for 3 uninterrupted years and you will have a lifetime subscription

I now know this is a dumb business decision on my part, but I have heard from many of you that it is a huge help, so the offer stands.

If you aren’t a member of my site and would like to join, click here: https://dwanethomas.com/join/.

Of course, if you are just starting out in Latin, you may be happier with Visual Latin.

If you are into etymology (the history of words), do not have time to learn Latin and Greek, and would like to watch me make a fool of myself, you might enjoy Word Up.

And, finally, years ago, I wrote a book on learning Latin.  Really, the book is on the process of learning.  In it, I share the tips, tricks, and secrets I use to learn languages.  You can get a digital copy of the book free on my site.  Just go here and plug in your name and email: https://dwanethomas.com/.

If you feel like buying me a coffee, you can buy the same digital book for a few dollars right here: https://dwanethomas.gumroad.com/l/fzixlh.

I hope you had a very happy Saturday!
Dwane

P.S.
If someone forwarded you this email and you would like to hear from me every week, just go to this page: https://dwanethomas.com/

Scroll down a bit until you see my book, Via.  Enter your name and email and you will hear from me weekly.  You will also get a free digital copy of my book.

You can also sign up for the weekly email by simply clicking here.

=================================================

Just so you know, I do not rent or share your name with anybody.  I hate it when people do that to me, and I refuse to do it to you.

Feel free to forward this letter to any friends you think would benefit from it. They will thank you. So will I.

One last thing.  There are affiliate links in this email.  I only recommend products I’ve either personally checked out or products that come from people I know and trust. When I recommend things, I occasionally receive a sales commission.  At no additional cost to you, commissions from affiliate links help me continue to offer language training at low prices.

Almost every Saturday, I send out a Tip of the Week.  The tip of the week is usually something I have picked up along the way that may make your life a little easier.

If you would like to hear from me (almost) every Saturday, just go to the home page of my site and plug in your name and email.   You will also get a free digital copy of my book on learning Latin (and almost anything else).  Just go here: https://dwanethomas.com/ and enter your name and email.

If you want to buy the digital book instead (because you just feel like buying me a cup of coffee) go here: https://dwanethomas.gumroad.com/l/fzixlh

If you are interested in learning Latin, you can go through the classes on my site 24/7.  I recommend the book Lingua Latina by Hans Ørberg.

If you tackle the book and find yourself bogged down, you may find the classes on my site helpful.  To join, just click here: https://dwanethomas.com/join/

If you want a more professionally filmed Latin learning experience, check out the best-selling DVD series: Visual Latin.

Or, if you want to skip Latin, and just jump right into learning English words from Latin and Greek roots, you may enjoy the series Word Up!  Warning.   Word Up! is a bit wacky.  You will learn a lot… but, you may find yourself rolling your eyes, too.

I teach other languages on my site, too.  The current schedule is here: https://dwanethomas.com/schedule/

By the way, some of the links in this post are affiliate links. Not trying to pull a fast one on you. I only promote what I believe in. Not only that, but commissions from affiliate links allow me to continue offering training and books at low prices and sometimes free.
