Tip of the Week #344: How to Conquer One of the World’s Greatest Fears

Public speaking consistently ranks as one of the most feared skills in the world—sometimes even above death!  

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld once joked, “According to most studies, people’s number-one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means, to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you’re better off in the casket than giving the eulogy.” 

Yet, public speaking is also one of the most valuable abilities you can ever develop.

If you’ve ever wanted to communicate more clearly, lead more confidently, or simply stop feeling nervous in front of a group, I highly recommend Toastmasters International.

I froze up at a friend’s wedding once.  Couldn’t deliver a toast.   One of the most embarrassing moments of my life.   A few days after the wedding, I joined Toastmasters International.

I was a member for ten years, and the experience changed how I speak and teach.  When the opportunity to film Visual Latin came along, I was ready.  I was no longer afraid to speak in public.  

If you’d like to strengthen your communication skills, look for a Toastmasters club near you. It’s one of the best investments you can make in yourself.
