Tip of the Week #347: Modern States Podcast

by | Nov 29, 2025 | Education, Tip of the Week

I’ve written about Modern States before. As you may know, you can test out of some college courses by taking CLEP exams.

If this is new to you, CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program — and it can save students a LOT of time and money.

I’ve looked into this in the past, but honestly, I found the process confusing.

Then I discovered ModernStates.org.

Back in 2017, Steve Klinsky wanted to decrease the cost of education and help students earn their first year of college for free. So he started Modern States.

Modern States offers free, online preparation courses for ALL CLEP exams.

And this part is amazing: If a student answers 75% of the practice test questions correctly, Modern States will pay the CLEP exam fee (currently around $90). They’ll even cover the test center fee in many cases.

With ModernStates.org, you can skip many of the “general education” classes colleges force freshmen to take. (Incidentally, those are the classes where colleges make a lot of their profit — because everyone is required to take them.)

Here is the new part. I just learned yesterday that Modern States now has a podcast! I’ve been listening to this episode: https://www.pastfoundation.org/post/289-opening-college-doors-for-free-with-jefferson-pestronk. It’s helpful. The founder explains the process Modern States uses to help students CLEP out of the first year of college.

The podcast features interviews, success stories, and practical guides for earning tuition-free college credit. Definitely worth a listen if you’re planning a CLEP strategy.

If you’re college-bound (or have a student who is), check out ModernStates.org. CLEP out of your first year of college and save a ton of money!

On a different note, I wanted to let you guys know about a CyberMonday deal over at Amazon.com. I use a Vitamix blender every day to make healthy smoothies.

My kids actually won’t drink the smoothies I make because, while they are definitely good for you, they don’t always taste that great. According to my kids… they never taste great.

Still, if you have been thinking of buying a Vitamix to make your own healthy smoothies (hopefully they will taste better than mine), click here on Cyber Monday: https://amzn.to/43ZZdpD.

Almost every Saturday, I send out a Tip of the Week.  The tip of the week is usually something I have picked up along the way that may make your life a little easier.

If you would like to hear from me (almost) every Saturday, just go to the home page of my site and plug in your name and email.   You will also get a free digital copy of my book on learning Latin (and almost anything else).  Just go here: https://dwanethomas.com/ and enter your name and email.

If you want to buy the digital book instead (because you just feel like buying me a cup of coffee) go here: https://dwanethomas.gumroad.com/l/fzixlh

If you are interested in learning Latin, you can go through the classes on my site 24/7.  I recommend the book Lingua Latina by Hans Ørberg.

If you tackle the book and find yourself bogged down, you may find the classes on my site helpful.  To join, just click here: https://dwanethomas.com/join/

If you want a more professionally filmed Latin learning experience, check out the best-selling DVD series: Visual Latin.

Or, if you want to skip Latin, and just jump right into learning English words from Latin and Greek roots, you may enjoy the series Word Up!  Warning.   Word Up! is a bit wacky.  You will learn a lot… but, you may find yourself rolling your eyes, too.

I teach other languages on my site, too.  The current schedule is here: https://dwanethomas.com/schedule/
