Tip of the Week #357: How to Fight Back Against Online Advertising

I hate advertisements.

Ad in Latin means “toward.”  Verto in Latin means “I turn.”  To advertise is literally to “turn toward.”  

What are we being turned toward?

Think about it.  You turn on your computer to get some work done, and advertisements (designed to turn you off course) distract you from your goal.

Something interrupts.  A banner.  A pop-up.  A flashing headline.

Your attention is turned toward the advertisement.  

Fortunately there is a way to fight back.

I use several ad blockers, but my favorite is uBlock Origin.  It’s a free browser extension that blocks intrusive ads, trackers, pop-ups, and other unwanted content as you browse the internet.

It’s open source, lightweight, and works on most major browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Opera.

And since uBlock Origin is open source, there are no subscription costs and no premium upgrade options.

Advertisers try to turn you.  You can turn them off.  And thanks to uBlock Origin, you can do it for free.
