Tip of the Week #369: Color-Code Your Keys

Here’s a simple trick that has saved me time for years: color-code your keys. All of my house keys wear a little green hat (a green key cap).

It’s a small thing, but small systems add up. Every time you don’t have to stop and think, you save a little mental energy. Plus, you won’t stand at the front door fumbling through your keys.

As for my house keys being green, I’m not too worried about thieves figuring out my system. We shop at yard sales and Goodwill. There isn’t much here worth stealing—unless you’re a robber who’s into Latin and language books. In that case, my house is a gold mine.

Next time you are in a hardware store, pick up a pack of colored key caps (they’re inexpensive) and assign a color to each type of key. It’s a five-minute project that could save you a few small moments of frustration.
