Tip of the Week #370: Stop Fighting the Sun
This week’s tip is more of a rant than a tip.
It’s summer. It’s hot. And it’s getting hotter.
I don’t know why, but people in my town seem to be most active during the hottest part of the day.
Just so you know, you don’t have to mow your lawn at two o’clock in the afternoon. You don’t have to schedule a birthday party at the park at three o’clock in the afternoon.
Here in Nashville, we’re on about the same latitude as Malta, Gibraltar, and the North African cities of Algiers and Tunis. In many hot climates, people have long understood the value of slowing down during the hottest part of the day and enjoying the cooler evenings instead.
I spent a summer in Athens trying to learn Greek. I was surprised to discover that you could actually get in trouble for making too much noise during the afternoon. People weren’t being lazy—they were avoiding the heat. They were resting.
There’s no rule that says we can’t do the same.
Our daily schedules seem better suited to the cooler climates of Northern Europe than to the US in July. Maybe we should borrow a page from Mediterranean culture and take a break when it’s brutally hot outside.
Mow the grass early in the morning.
Host the cookout after dinner.
Take an evening walk instead of an afternoon one.
