Tip of the Week #372: Delete This App. Reclaim Your Time.

by | Jul 25, 2026 | Tip of the Week

In his book The 4-Hour Workweek, Tim Ferriss identifies one of the greatest time wasters in the modern world: email.

He argues that, if your job permits, you should check and respond to email only twice a day—once around lunchtime and once at the end of the workday.

I would add one more suggestion: if at all possible, remove email from your phone.

I did this years ago, and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Every now and then, it creates a minor inconvenience. Occasionally, a company wants to email me a verification code while I’m away from my computer. When that happens, I simply reinstall my email app, retrieve the code, and then remove the app again. Definitely annoying, but you know. Modern world and all that.

The benefits of removing email far outweigh the inconvenience.

I’m less stressed, far less distracted, and much more intentional about when I deal with email. Instead of email controlling my day, I control when I check it.

If you’re feeling constantly interrupted, try removing email from your phone for just one week. You can always reinstall it if you don’t like the results.

I have a feeling you won’t.

Kelly responded:

I love any tip that gives me back my time! Another option: I turned off the notifications for all email apps.  I check it when I want, access when I need it, but it doesn’t grab for my attention.

Almost every Saturday, I send out a Tip of the Week.  The tip of the week is usually something I have picked up along the way that may make your life a little easier.

If you would like to hear from me (almost) every Saturday, just go to the home page of my site and plug in your name and email.   You will also get a free digital copy of my book on learning Latin (and almost anything else).  Just go here: https://dwanethomas.com/ and enter your name and email.

If you want to buy the digital book instead (because you just feel like buying me a cup of coffee) go here: https://dwanethomas.gumroad.com/l/fzixlh

If you are interested in learning Latin, you can go through the classes on my site 24/7.  I recommend the book Lingua Latina by Hans Ørberg.

If you tackle the book and find yourself bogged down, you may find the classes on my site helpful.  To join, just click here: https://dwanethomas.com/join/

If you want a more professionally filmed Latin learning experience, check out the best-selling DVD series: Visual Latin.

Or, if you want to skip Latin, and just jump right into learning English words from Latin and Greek roots, you may enjoy the series Word Up!  Warning.   Word Up! is a bit wacky.  You will learn a lot… but, you may find yourself rolling your eyes, too.

I teach other languages on my site, too.  The current schedule is here: https://dwanethomas.com/schedule/
