I loved reading comic books as a kid. Then I grew up and stopped reading comics. Â
Now I’m reading them again—this time in French, Spanish, and German.
Comic books are a great way to enjoy language learning. You get real dialogue, high-frequency vocabulary, and something most textbooks fail to offer: fun.
Before the internet, I had to hope my local library had foreign-language comics. They didn’t. Maybe a stray Spanish one here and there. That was about it.
But now? Thanks to the Internet Archive, you can read entire comic book series in your target language—for free.
The best part? You don’t need to understand every word. The pictures guide you. The context fills in the gaps.Â
It’s language learning disguised as a good time.
Right now, I’m working through the Tintin series in French. If you’re looking for a place to start, here’s one: Le Secret de la Licorne (The Secret of the Unicorn)
