Yesterday I asked, “Can you think of any English words that derive from the Latin word, caput?”

A few of you took a stab at it.  Just like a little league baseball game, no one struck out.

You guessed cap, capitulate, capital, capitol, and decapitate (ewww.)

You are all correct.  Each word comes from the Latin word for head.

Brace yourself.  There are many many more English words that come from caput.

Cap, capitulate, and capital come from the word.  But, so do cabbage, cape, capitalism, captain, recapitulate, and sinciput.  And, that’s not all.

For the rest of the week, we will look at the many English words derived from caput.
