abyss: a bottomless pit; an unfathomable depth; or even, a hopeless situation.
From Greek ἄβυσσος (bottomless). This word breaks down into ἀ (not) and βυθός (deep place).
I’ve never seen this abyss, though I hope to while traveling “out West” this summer.
The title of this picture, appropriately, is “Looking into the Abyss”. The cowboy (casting the shadow in the lower right corner) is gazing into the Colorado river canyon at Horseshoe Bend.
The picture above gives you a feel for the depth of the abyss, but, hey… why not a prettier picture?
