I like portmanteau words.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, let me explain.

A portmanteau was once a traveling case for clothing.  Once you reached your destination, it could double as a small piece of furniture.

The word comes from the French portmanteau.  The French word is a combination of Latin porto (I carry) and the French manteau (cloak).

Here’s where it gets fun.  A portmanteau word is a blending of two different words to create a new concept.

For example, smoke + fog = smog.  Motor car + Hotel = Motel.  Slacker + activism = Slacktivism.

This week, I will be posting portmanteau words.  Feel free to add your favorite portmanteau words in the comment section.
